Q&A with

Liz Berger

How valuable was the Transition to Portfolio programme for you?
The Transition to Portfolio programme was crucial for me. It helped me get my resume in order, specifically formatting it for leadership and advisory roles. It also made me reflect on how others perceive me as a leader and pushed me to consider the complexities of today’s business environment. I now feel well-prepared for the challenges ahead.

Do you see yourself leveraging your placement experience to advance your career?
Absolutely. I've already been leveraging my role as a non-executive director with FinAmplio, a financial literacy company. This experience will help me take on other pro bono or paid engagements, while always remembering the lessons learned along the way.

How much value have you gained from your placement?
The value has been significant. In my eight weeks with FinAmplio, we’ve learned a lot from each other. I've helped them think about marketing strategies in the UK and beyond, and brought my expertise in risk management, audit, and compliance. Together, we’ve made strides toward their goals.

How important is it for founders to build a board of advisors in the early stages?
It’s essential, especially if founders lack expertise in areas like finance or compliance. Having advisors who understand taxes, regulations, and risk management can be vital to the startup’s success. It’s also beneficial to have someone who can guide them through available grants or opportunities to help get the business off the ground.

How does the Transition to Portfolio programme help upskill portfolio professionals?
The programme was incredibly beneficial. It got my resume into shape and helped me reflect on my leadership style. It also pushed me to consider the challenges of today's business world and how to guide others through them.

Do you feel prepared for a portfolio career after completing the programme?
Yes, I feel well-prepared. The programme helped me reflect on whether I do my homework before interacting with founders, if I understand the startup landscape, and if I stay current with industry trends. These are all critical aspects of becoming a better leader and advisor.
