Q&A with

Steve Martin

1. What motivated you to join the "Transition to Portfolio" programme, and how does it align with your professional goals?

Connectd reached out to me at an inflection point in my life.  After having worked in IT for the past 40 years, I’ve asked myself ‘What’s next?’.

Rather than looking at regular full time employment, I decided I wanted to fill my days with interesting yet different engagements and work.  My hope is that Connectd can provide those opportunities.

2. How has the programme influenced your perspective on becoming a fractional executive so far?

At first, I thought becoming a Fractional Executive was the fastest way for me to become productive and add value to a start up. After my initial discussion with my mentor, it’s clear I need to rethink how to approach the roles offered.

After 40 years of executing, I need to step back and focus on being more of an advisor.

3. What specific skills or knowledge have you gained in the programme that you feel will be most valuable for your transition?

The role and need to clarify a problem, not to solve the startup’s problem.  Again, it’s to act in more of an advisory capacity.

4. How has the programme's content or structure supported your learning and development up to this point?

I’m glad I met with my mentor after reviewing a substantial portion of the prep material.

He helped me to understand a bit more of the difference between roles and how to approach the exercises, not as a hands-on part of the executing team but more of an advisory capacity.

5. What are you most excited to apply from what you've learned in the programme, as you continue your journey toward becoming a fractional executive?

I am looking forward to understanding the current status of a startup and helping to guide good problem solving, thorough analysis and how to drive good and timely decisions to benefit them.
