With extensive experience in scaling SaaS and PE/VC-backed ventures, Michael Horsley joined Connectd’s Transition to Portfolio programme to launch his board advisory career.
He showcased his expertise through a pro bono placement at one of our startups, eventually turning it into a paid fractional role.
The Transition to Portfolio programme has given me the confidence and assurance, with proven experience, that I can work with founders and secure my first fractional role.
What impact has completing the ‘Transition to Portfolio’ programme had on your portfolio career path?
The Strategic Advisory education gave me a solid foundation to build my profile on the platform. Leveraging that knowledge led me to my first advisory role.
After working with the founder for five to six months, I was able to convert that pro bono role into a paid fractional position—proving the value I was bringing to the business.
How have the skills and knowledge you gained during the programme helped you secure or approach non-executive director positions?
I think it’s a combination of things. The educational component, working with a mentor who shares their experience and advice, and attending Connectd’s events to learn from those with established portfolio careers.
It also provides the opportunity to network with other advisors and non-exec directors, creating a strong network of connections that’s just as important.
Can you share a specific moment or session from the programme that significantly shaped your approach to non-executive director leadership?
It’s given me the confidence and assurance, with proven experience, that I can work with founders in a credible way and build rapport quickly.
Getting that first role through the Connectd platform and working with the team gave me the confidence to secure that opportunity and then go on to gain additional roles.
Do you feel more confident and prepared to take on non-executive director roles after completing the programme?
Working with my Connectd mentor was invaluable. His advice was to step outside my comfort zone and work in industries where I have less experience. This broadens your knowledge, expands your network, and builds your experience.
Once you’ve successfully taken on one advisory or NED role, it boosts your confidence to take on more roles, finding opportunities through your experience and network.
What’s the next step you want to take on your portfolio professional journey?
The next step in my journey, particularly with Connectd, is to complete the non-exec educational track and secure a non-exec role through the platform. Ultimately, the goal is to come full circle by becoming a Connectd mentor and sharing my experience with future cohorts of the Transition to Portfolio programme.
I see this as a positive journey, moving from starting as a member to mentoring others in the years to come.
